MEDICAID & YOUR EMPLOYEES
Medicaid is a government program that provides health insurance to those with limited income and resources. In 2020, Congress passed an Act that required states to maintain Medicaid coverage for recipients and barred disenrollment during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. This effort was to ensure that people did not lose their coverage during the pandemic. That Act has expired and beginning April 1, 2023 and over the next 12 months states are reevaluating all Medicaid enrollees to assess their eligibility. It’s estimated that 15 million Americans may lose Medicaid in the process.
Loss of Medicaid is a Qualifying Event which would allow affected employees to join their employer’s health plan mid-year. Employees are eligible for enrollment on the first of the month after their Medicaid termination. Proof of the loss of coverage may be required so it’s advised that employees hold onto their Medicaid termination notification letters for this purpose.
